Homeschooling
Homeschooling is constantly growing in popularity nationwide and locally. In the US, approximately 7% of school-aged children are homeschooled. In Tennessee, and Jefferson County, nearly 14% of students attend home or virtual school of some sort.
All of our libraries in Jefferson County aim to support our growing homeschool community. In 2022, Dandridge Memorial Library received the American Library Assocation Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries Grant. This funding was used this funding to host conversations with homeschool parents and expand our resources.
Our Resources
While we already had a small selection of resources in our collection, the LTC grant allowed us to expand this collection tremendously.
First, we were able to host a town hall meeting for homeschool parents — and those interested in homeschooling — where each attendee was provided with a special tote bag filled with informative books, as well as a notebook to take notes on what they learned. Several tote bags are still available for anyone who was unable to attend!
We had a great discussion at the meeting, which has inspired plans for several future programs geared toward homeschoolers and kids of all ages.
Second, we purchased close to 100 new books, DVDs and kits for our collection! Just a few of these are shown to the right. These and more are available to checkout for free just like any other items in our circulating collection.

A big thank you to the patrons who have donated!
One of the biggest struggles for homeschoolers, according to those we talked to, is knowing where to start. There are so many curriculum options, learning resources and more that it’s hard to know which will be the best fit for your family. The resources listed below come highly recommended by homeschoolers and educators, and will provide a good starting point for anyone new to homeschooling, as well as a supplement for those who have been schooling at home for years. We have made sure to include links to local groups, classes and more that will help parents connect with each other.
Please note that some of these resources do require registration, while others are completely free.
